Details

The Bulwark serves as the fleet's premier gunnery platform, crewed largely by graduates of the Fleet's own gunnery qualification programme. Assignment to her gun decks is treated less as a posting and more as an audition — crews rotate through on results, not seniority.

A Bastion-class heavy gunship, she trades carrier capacity and sensor range for raw broadside output. Her primary battery remains the heaviest fielded by any UFN hull currently in service, a distinction the ship has held for years and one the crew treats as a standard to defend rather than a record to rest on.

Doctrine & Trials

Bulwark is regularly used to trial new ordnance and targeting doctrine before fleet-wide rollout. New systems are proven here first, under live-fire conditions, before they're cleared for the rest of the fleet — which means her crew works to a standard that assumes failure will be found before it costs a ship elsewhere.

Details of casualties sustained during one such trial remain sealed under Federation Code §47.9. What is on record: the trial's findings were incorporated fleet-wide within the following quarter, and the Bulwark's gunnery programme has not repeated the failure mode since.

Reputation

To serve aboard the Bulwark is to serve on a ship with a reputation to defend, gunnery scores rather than rank politics driving assignment and advancement across her decks.

Officers who transfer out speak of the ship the way veterans speak of hard postings — not fondly, exactly, but with a kind of respect they don't extend to easier ones. New arrivals expecting an easy posting tend to recalibrate fast.
