Marsh came up through the Marine Corps the traditional way — through the bottom of it. He enlisted as a rating before the commissioned officer pathway, served two years in shipboard security before passing the commission examination, and has since held almost every posting the Corps offers, including several that no longer exist in the current force structure.
The posting to Commandant followed a period as Deputy Commandant during which Marsh restructured the Corps' boarding protocol after an incident in which an equipment failure during a scheduled exercise produced a casualty that should not have been possible under the existing training regime. The investigation he led was thorough and, in the view of some senior officers, unnecessarily public. Marsh's position on that question has not changed.
He is not the largest person in any room he enters, which surprises some people who have heard the callsign before meeting the man. The callsign is not about size. It is about what happens to things that collide with him.
Responsibilities
The Commandant of the Marine Corps holds command authority over all boarding, security, and ground deployment operations conducted on behalf of the United Federated Navy. Commodore Marsh leads the Corps and advises the Admiral directly on matters of close-quarters and surface engagement.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Boarding Operations - commanding Marine detachments during boarding actions, salvage recovery, and hostile vessel seizures
- Ground Deployment - directing landing parties and surface security details across colonial and frontier installations
- Installation Security - overseeing the protection of UFN shipyards, stations, and command facilities against infiltration or assault
- Marine Training - setting the qualification standards Marine officers must meet before assignment to active units
- Tactical Advisory - providing counsel to the Admiral and Fleet Chief Gunnery Officer on close-quarters engagement doctrine
- Rapid Response Coordination - maintaining Marine readiness for deployment alongside 3rd Fleet strike operations
